ECO Subject 1: Principles of Ultrasound and iHeartScan

The ECO subject 1 tutorials are designed to give you a solid grounding in echocardiography. The subject starts with several important building block tutorials such as the role of echocardiography in perioperative and critical care medicine, physics, modes of ultrasound, and optimising the image.

These tutorials are presented in detailed form, as they are not taught at other stages of the course. You are then instructed on how to perform both transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography examinations. These tutorials are essential for you to understand the technique as well as getting you used to the echocardiography images and view nomenclature.

More advanced tutorials on the anatomy of the heart, coronary vessels, and valves are included. After you have assimilated these fundamentals, you move onto goal-focused echocardiography, you will learn about basic hemodynamic state assessment, and basic valve assessment using two-dimensional and color flow Doppler. This approach follows the goal-focused Hemodynamic Echocardiography Assessment in Real Time (iHeartScan) study which includes interpretation and reporting of echocardiography studies. There are 20 basic TTE and 10 basic TEE studies included to reinforce your learning. The subject is rounded off by a tutorial on artefact generation.

The course instruction builds upon previous knowledge so it is best to complete the subjects in order. For the ECO certification, all subjects ECO 1 – 4 need to be completed and satisfactorily passed.

This is an online course. Upon receipt of payment, the student will receive a “Getting Started” email with instructions on how to access the course materials.

Students have the flexibility to study in their own time and location. Program materials can be accessed through the iTeachU app on smartphones and tablets with iOS, Android or Windows systems. Once the program materials have been downloaded on smartphones and tablets, all the interactive media content can be viewed even when offline (however internet access is required periodically to login or re-verify login credentials).  Program materials can also be accessed online using a web browser.
