ECO Subject 2: Ultrasound Guided Procedures

The ECO subject 2 outlines the technique of using ultrasound to guide percutaneous procedures. Procedures will include vessel access, nerve blocks, and trauma-related procedures.

Subject 2 is designed to give a broad overview of clinical ultrasound uses other than just echocardiography. It is presented as the 2nd subject, as many of our students want to acquire the knowledge to use in their clinical practice at an early stage in the course. Ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia is a major use of clinical ultrasound for anesthesiologists, but less so for non-anesthesiologists. Accordingly, this subject is divided into core and optional modules. There is the option to select either an anesthesia or ICU module. The student has access to all tutorials from both modules but will only be assessed on the core and the one optional module.

The core topics include ultrasound-guided vascular access, introduction to abdominal scanning with the FAST scan, additional ultrasound uses in trauma which covers a wide variety of interesting applications including lung ultrasound. Basic vascular ultrasound assessment is also covered. If you choose the anesthesia module, there are 5 tutorials covering different aspects of ultrasound guided regional anaesthesia including upper limb, lower limb, peripheral nerves, nerve block catheters, and abdominal and thoracic blocks. If you choose the ICU module, you will receive tutorials on trunk blocks for ICU, diagnostic dilemmas and preoperative medicine, diagnostic dilemmas in the intensive care unit, an ultrasound assessment of deep venous thrombosis. There are an additional 10 Basic TEE cases which are optional.

The course instruction builds upon previous knowledge so it is best to complete the subjects in order. For the ECO certification, all subjects ECO 1 – 4 need to be completed and satisfactorily passed.

This is an online course. Upon receipt of payment, the student will receive a “Getting Started” email with instructions on how to access the course materials.

Students have the flexibility to study in their own time and location. Program materials can be accessed through the iTeachU app on smartphones and tablets with iOS, Android or Windows systems. Once the program materials have been downloaded on smartphones and tablets, all the interactive media content can be viewed even when offline (however internet access is required periodically to login or re-verify login credentials).  Program materials can also be accessed online using a web browser.
